"My favorite part of running my business is meeting my customers and building a relationship with them." - India Hearne, Boss Lady & Designer, Whiski Designs
I'm super excited to introduce you to Texas Maker, India Hearne, Boss Lady and Designer of Whiski Designs. Located in Dallas, Texas, Whiski Designs provides hand-lettering and graphic design work with a southwestern flair.
In this article, we'll learn how India began her shop, her favorite part about being a business owner and much more. We're so happy to share her story and encourage you to follow and support her work. Read on y'all!
Tell us a little about your business and when & how you got started.
I have always loved to draw, and typography has always been a huge interest of mine. When I started studying Graphic Design in college out in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I quickly realized that when I designed on the computer my designs didn't come out exactly how I had imagined they would. So, I started drawing and hand lettering whatever popped into my mind!
I officially established Whiski Designs back in 2014 when I was a senior in high school. My parents and I started popping up at local markets around Dallas the summer in between high school and college. Since then, my business has grown into what I always dreamed it would be. I am very excited to see what this next year has in store for Whiski Designs.
What is your favorite item in the shop now?
I would say that my favorite item of mine right now is my 'There's No Place Like Home' print with the Dallas skyline and prickly pear cactus. I recently moved back to Dallas from Santa Fe, and can finally relate to that saying. There really is no place like home.
Any new collections/projects in the works?
At Whiski Designs, there are always new designs and projects in the works. As of right now, we are finishing out the year with a few more local pop up markets. Stay tuned for new designs and projects that I will be posting about on my social media accounts and website! Instagram: @WhiskiDesigns - Facebook: Whiski Designs - Website: www.whiskidesigns.com
What is your favorite part of running your own business? What's the hardest part?
My favorite part of running my business is meeting my customers and building a relationship with them. I work a lot with my parents, and I absolutely love that part of it as well. They have owned their own business in the past, and they have taught me so many things. Without them I wouldn't able to do what I do!
I would say the hardest part of running my business is trying to balance my personal life and my business life. When you own your own business, there are no days off. Well, at least for me. I am always coming up with new ideas to help my business grow, answering e mails, designing, etc. I wouldn't have it any other way!
What advice would you give small business owner just starting out?
I would say to always expect the unexpected. When owning your own business, you always have to be on top of things and willing to adjust to whatever the circumstance may be. Whether it's working with a customer, setting up at a pop up market, or producing items.
What's one place in Texas that everyone must visit at least once?
I would say to definitely check out Deep Ellum in Dallas. My business is based in Deep Ellum, and I love it here. There are so many great bars and restaurants to check out, as well as art. Deep Ellum is known for street art and murals around the neighborhood. I recently painted one, and I can honestly say a dream of mine came true! Another great thing about Deep Ellum is that it is a stone's throw away from downtown Dallas. There really is so much to do. A must see!
Anything else that you'd like to add/share?I would like to send a huge thank you to Mickey at Cool Beans Box for creating a place that supports local Texas Makers! Cheers!
A big thank you to India for sharing her story and for her kind words.
